Donor support is vital for ESR programs
East Suburban Resources
Why is ESR increasingly focusing attention on fundraising?
More than 90 percent of ESR's funding comes through state and federal
sources. Each year, these government funds shrink. At the same time, costs
increase and the demand for services grow. To meet the demand and fill the gap
between funding and the actual costs of providing services, we must fundraise.
What does my donation support?
--Transportation. Most of our consumers do not drive and there are few, if
any, options for public transportation in Washington County. The lack of
transportation becomes a barrier to meaningful employment and community
integration. ESR maintains a fleet of nearly 40 cars, minivans and
wheelchair-accessible vans to ensure that no one is denied a ride. However,
government reimbursements do not fully cover transportation costs, leaving a
gap the agency must fill on its own.
--Programming. As government funding shrinks, there are fewer resources
available to sustain programs that enable adults with disabilities to find jobs, gain
new skills, integrate into the community and prevent isolation.
--Service expansion. ESR serves more than 325 consumers, and welcomes as
many as 30 new admissions annually. As we welcome new consumers we must
add staff, drive longer transportation routes, find space in program centers for
those who prefer a congregate setting, add vehicles to our fleet, and so on. With
each individual we welcome to service, costs rise.
--Technology. It is important for ESR to have access to current technologies in
order to compete in today's business world, maintain accurate records, interact
with government funding sources, and allow staff to work efficiently.
